Chapter Eight

Shock drove Rory from the snowmobile that he’d parked behind Kristi’s machine. He wrenched off his helmet, letting it slip from nerveless fingers onto the snow in Doc Justine’s driveway. Dumbstruck, he watched as Kristi knelt, and the little boy ran happily into his mother’s arms.

Kristi had a son? His head reeled with the sudden revelation, and the earth seemed to tilt on its axis.

Why hadn’t she mentioned the boy? They’d been stranded together in a cabin for two days, and she hadn’t so much as dropped a hint. Why the hell not?

The youngster’s hair was as black as raven wings, his cheeks chubby to go with his sturdy young body, his complexion shades darker than Kristi’s fair skin. Although Rory wasn’t much of a judge, he guessed the child’s age to be about five.

A prickling sensation crept down Rory’s spine, and a knot tightened in his gut. Who was the boy’s father?

“We missed you, Mommy.”

Kristi returned the youngster’s hug, kissing the boy. “I missed you, too, champ.” She finger combed her son’s dark hair back from his forehead.

“Grandma Justy said it was okay for us to come visit so we got in Grandma’s car and drove and drove until Grandma told me to stop asking if we was there yet.” His feet shuffled back and forth as though standing still was beyond his ability. “And then we was here.”

“Yes, I can see that.” Kristi stood, her arm protectively around the boy’s shoulder. Her gaze met Rory’s, a hint of defiance in her eyes, which didn’t quite match the nervous sweep of her tongue across her lips. “Rory, I’d like you to meet my son, Adam.”

Without waiting for any further introduction, the boy shrugged away from his mother and said, “Hi. My name’s Adam William Kerrigan and I just turned five years old.” He stomped through the trampled snow of the driveway and extended his hand to Rory. “That means pretty soon I can be in regular kindergarten. Miss Zidbeck says she’ll be glad to see me gone cuz I talk too much.”

A painful lump formed in Rory’s throat. Slipping off his heavy snow glove, he extended his hand to the boy. He wanted to say something to the youngster, but myriad emotions tangled his tongue and squeezed his heart. The boy didn’t seem to notice.

“Can I have a ride on your snowmobile?” he asked, his feet already in motion toward the vehicle. “I’ve got a helmet at home but I didn’t bring it with me. You could give me one, though. What’s in the box on the sled?”

Rory found his voice. “Stay away from the crate, son.” Son. The word slipped past his tongue on a whisper. Was it possible? Surely she would have told him. That wasn’t a secret a woman had a right to keep. “There’s a wolf inside. We don’t want to frighten him.”

“A real one?” Eager eyes as dark as his own looked up at Rory.

“Adam!” Kristi lunged toward her son, snaring him before he could investigate the contents of the crate.
